New cases

BFSO received 6,326 new cases during the year, an increase of 3.6 per cent from the previous year.

Source of increased cases
In March 2002 the Ombudsman’s jurisdiction was extended to include disputes about related entities of bank members and non-bank members. The extension of jurisdiction did not have an immediate impact on the cases received and in fact, the number of new cases received dropped from 2002 – 2004. The increase of 222 new cases in 2006 can be attributed to an increase of 103 cases relating to bank members and their related entities and an increase of 119 cases relating to non-bank members.
